Most tanks in Cabarrus County were buried with the lid a foot or two under the lawn, which was fine when nobody expected to open them. Every pump-out and every inspection since has meant finding the lid, digging it out and filling the hole again. A riser is a sealed ring from the tank top to grade with a lockable lid, fitted once.
The crew fits risers on the pumping or inspection visit so the tank is only opened once. Both lids on a two-compartment tank are usually done together. Lids are secured so a child or a mower cannot open them, and the top sits flush enough to mow over.

Fitting risers on Cabarrus County tanks
Concrete tanks from the 1980s and 1990s usually have two access openings; newer plastic and concrete tanks have the same, with the outlet filter under the second. A riser over each means the filter can be cleaned without digging, which is the maintenance most often skipped because it is buried.
In the county's red clay a lid two feet down is a half hour with a pick in August. Risers pay for themselves on the second visit, and sellers fit them before an inspection so the buyer's inspector is not the one digging.
Septic Riser and Lid Installation pricing in Concord
One riser and lid fitted on an open tank runs about $250 to $600 in 2026, depending on depth; the second on the same tank is less. Fitted on a pumping visit there is no separate call-out. Concrete and polyethylene risers are both available; the crew says which suits the tank.
What moves the number: the depth to the tank top, one opening or two, and whether the old lid needs a new adapter ring. The firm number comes from the crew on the phone.

Septic Riser and Lid Installation questions, answered
Is a riser required in North Carolina?
New systems are permitted with access to grade; existing tanks are not required to be retrofitted. It is worth doing anyway, because the alternative is paying for the dig every time.
Can the riser lid be hidden?
It sits flush or an inch above the lawn and can be mowed around. A planter or a decorative rock over it is fine as long as it lifts off; do not build a deck or a patio over it.
Will the riser leak groundwater into the tank?
Not if it is sealed correctly. The joint to the tank is the part that matters, and it is the reason to have it fitted rather than dropped in.
